List of Fastest Growing Companies in Australia

Australian entrepreneurship continues strong despite the economic wild-ride COVID has created.

November 14, 2022

These companies are growing faster than a speeding…kangaroo!

The last 12 months in Australia have been a wild ride, economically speaking. Between the pandemic, droughts, floods, wildfires, and more, one would think that high-growth companies would be on a bit of a hiatus. But, if you thought that, you don’t know Australian entrepreneurship.

The latter half of 2020 and the first half of 2021 have brought tremendous growth for some extremely cool companies who call the Down Under continent home. And, what’s probably even more important, a lot of these companies bring a ton of quality-of-life improvements to their employees and communities. At the end of the day, isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

(By the way, to build out this article we relied on our own custom reports from right here at Gazelle.ai, as well as the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 – Australia)

About the Australian economy

Like much of the world, Australia is economically rebounding after getting absolutely hammered by the Covid-19 pandemic. GDP is expected to grow by 5.1% in 2021 and by 3.4% in 2022. So, to oversimplify things to a ridiculous level, things were bad but they’re starting to look up. All that economic activity that was bottled up during successive lockdowns and restrictions seems to be bubbling back up.

Tech, tech everywhere

It probably goes without saying that virtually every company on lists like the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 and our own list of Australian companies making an impact heavily incorporates technology into their business model. Even in traditionally…traditional…companies, these high-growth companies are using tech to unlock their full potential.

That’s probably pretty obvious. After all, it’s hard to grow at over 1000% unless you’re leaning pretty heavily into the whole technology thing.

What we find interesting, though, is how ubiquitous and far-reaching technology is in this list. No matter the kind of company, from digital finance player Zip to JSHealth Vitamins, tech infuses all of these firms to a level that was previously unheard of.

Woman power

And, just as technology is driving much of the growth of these companies, female leadership is driving a larger and larger chunk of the organizations on the list. Not just in classic, you know, run-of-the-mill companies that make widgets and stuff. No, what we thought was cool was that some of these female-led companies are tackling consumer pain points that would be immediately obvious to many women but to which all men remain stubbornly clueless. (Full disclosure: The writer of this article is the owner of a Y-chromosome.)

For example, Modibodi sells – among other things – period-proof undies and maternity clothes that solve big problems for women that none of the major players (aka. male-run companies) seem to be adequately responding to.

Imagine, that. Having women in charge gives companies better insight into female consumers. ;)

Why Economic Developers should care?

So why should you, as your local economic development organization professional, care about any of this?

Because Australia is an effective incubator of profitable, rapidly expanding companies that are constantly looking for ways to expand beyond their own borders. While Australia’s population of around 25 million people creates a pretty decent domestic market, the local players are often champing at the bit to get access to the lucrative North American and European markets.

The companies that come bouncing out of Australia are economically proven, full of highly educated and talented people, and culturally similar to North American and European firms.

Interestingly, companies out of Australia tend to have very satisfied and happy workforces. We released a list recently that showcased some of the best Australian startups and tech companies to work for. And there was a lot to choose from.

One, in particular, caught our eye. Secure Code Warrior trains software developers to build secure code from the ground up. Which is, in and of itself, a pretty great mission. (Lord knows we’d all like to go at least a week without hearing about the latest ransomware attack.) But it’s their focus on their employees and partners that really has us excited.

Places like Secure Code Warrior aren’t the factories of your grandparents’ generations. These are workplaces that employees are excited to go to in the morning and that communities welcome with open arms. From encouraging truly diverse workforces to giving back to the towns and cities where they do business, businesses like Secure Code Warrior don’t pursue profit at the expense of quality of life. They find ways to achieve both.

This can be a big deal for your locality. All the jobs in the world aren’t going to do much for the quality of life for your citizens if they aren’t the right kind of jobs. It seems, however, that Australia does a great job of exporting the kind of work that people actually like to do.
